MT ELIZA, RED LEICESTER
Mt Eliza's flagship cheese, big and bold with full-bodied rich and round flavours. This raw milk cheese is made with traditional methods, brought to you by one of New Zealand's pioneers of raw milk cheeses.
In 2007 Cheshire-born Chris Whalley and Kiwi wife Jill moved to Katikati with a big vision to use unpasteurised milk to bring Aotearoa their great flavours.
It has been no mean feat: Chris and Jill found themselves doing the research for the regulatory framework that is now mandated by the MPI. They even presented a platter of their own and imported raw milk cheeses to a select committee hearing in Parliament. We're glad they did! The flavours are sweet and delicious, with a depth and complexity that can only be explained by the unpasteurised half-jersey milk.
MEYER GOUDA, SHEEP MILK GOUDA
Meyer Sheeps Milk Gouda is a true classic made locally in the Aotearoa-Dutch tradition. Made with 100% sheep milk, this firm, full-flavoured gouda is perfect for your unique cheese board treat.
EVANSDALE, SAGE DERBY
Evansdale's Sage Derby is another exceptionally unique cheese. An old English cheese set with ground sage. The base of this cheese is Ruby Bay, a mature cheese, with the addition of sage which is added when the curd is taken out of the vat, then enrobed in green wax.
Evansdale Cheese started in 1977 with the Dennison family cow. It's still a small, family run business, and the Dennison family members continue to make cheese by hand in a factory at Hawksbury village just outside Dunedin.
Evansdale Cheese now produce 20-30 different varieties of cheese that are preservative and calf rennet free in a range of robust and delicate flavours; from curds to blue, to hard cheeses, and soft brie cheeses.
OVER THE MOON DAIRY, MOONCRATER
We have a secret to tell you: We had a gap to fill when the cheese we were set to include in this month's box was scuppered to the snap L4 lockdown! It's just another reminder of how tough the business environment is for our local cheesemakers. Don't worry though - you'll be seeing the delicious Garlic and Herb Bouchees from Anabelle's Fine Fresh Cheeses in October!
Our friends in the make room at Over the Moon Dairy came to the rescue, making a special run of Mooncrater for us - it's a very rare fresh cheese indeed! Made only occasionally, it's a cow's milk round encased in ash (sometimes used by the French to aid the ripening process) with a crinkly white mould rind and a soft marshmallow-like paste.. ooooh need we say more....!!
