GERALDINE CHEESE, AGED DEER GOUDA

Champion Original Cheese, 2021 New Zealand Champions of Cheese

Deer Gouda! This is one of the most unusual cheeses you'll find in the land and truly deserving of the gold medal and category win at the New Zealand Champions of Cheese Awards.

Made by Geraldine Cheese Co's Paul Fitzsimmons, a veteran of the specialty cheese industry, it’s a beautifully deep ivory colour with scattered calcium lactate crystals – which indicates its age and gives it depth of flavour. We love its complex, unique flavour, sweetness, umami, slight caramel notes, and the way it lingers on the palate.

It’s a truly rare, deer, treat!

LITTLE RIVER ESTATE, AGED SWISS

Champion European Style Cheese, 2021 New Zealand Champions of Cheese

Sweet, nutty, and savoury all at once, this a semi-hard, cooked curd cheese is perfect on a cheeseboard, in a sandwich or grilled toast, or eaten by the chunk.

Little River Estate cheeses are made with A2 milk and contrary to the name, they’re not made in the Canterbury town of the same name. These delicious cheese hail from Moutere, Tasman, made in the same factory as the multi-award-winning range of Thorvald Sheep Milk cheese and yoghurts, making efficient use of the factory by diversifying output.

A great local substitute for Gruyere, it melts nicely too. Another deserving category champion!

OVER THE MOON DAIRY, DOUBLE DELIGHT BRIE

Gold medal, 2021 New Zealand Champions of Cheese

The perfect combination of delicate goats milk and rich cows cream makes this truly a unique cheese. Soft and rich, it melts in the mouth while displaying notes of the delicate goats’ milk flavour, balanced and softened by the buttery notes from the cows’ cream. Double Delight Brie has been one of Over the Moon Dairy’s quiet achievers for many years, but its new gold medal says it’s now time to step into the spotlight.

MEYER CHEESE, ITALIAN HERB GOUDA

Gold medal, 2021 New Zealand Champions of Cheese

The Meyer family certainly know how to make a quality gouda, and this Italian Herb Gouda is no exception. The family brought their passion for making gouda to the Waikato from tiny village in the South of the Netherlands and continue to pass the skill down through the generations.

This gouda is full of flavour, texture and looks great. It’s hard to beat on a pizza (the Meyers call it their pizza cheese as the herb blend used is much the same as you would use on a traditional pizza) or grilled cheese sandwich – but equally great on a cheese board.
